Choose the Right Gloves, Wear Them Correctly!

Let's be honest.
You see it every day. Workers wearing gloves that are too thin for the job. Gloves that are worn long after they should have been replaced. Gloves that are taken off to handle a "quick" task—and then forgotten.
And then, an injury happens. A cut. A chemical burn. A contamination incident. All because the wrong glove was chosen, or the right glove was used incorrectly.

Today, we're going to talk about why proper glove selection and correct usage matter—and how you can get both right.
Why Correct Glove Selection Matters
The wrong glove for the job leaves workers exposed. One safety manager might buy one universal set of gloves for all employees, assuming it covers all hazards.
It doesn't.
Different tasks present different hazards. A glove that protects against chemicals may offer zero cut protection. A glove that stops blades may be useless against solvents. There is no single glove material that can protect against all chemical, physical, or biological hazards.
The key is matching the glove to the specific hazard you face.
The Selection Process: Ask These Questions
Before you choose a glove, consider:

| What is the proper size? | Too tight = fatigue; too loose = hazard |

The Five Critical Factors for Glove Selection
No. 1: Task-Appropriate Protection
A safety glove that's designed for one hazard might not protect against another. Cut-resistant gloves, for example, are rated from A1 to A9 (ANSI) or A to F (EN388). Level F gloves stop extreme blade force—but they also offer little chemical protection.
Chemical-resistant gloves come in materials like nitrile, neoprene, butyl, and PVC—each with different chemical compatibility. Nitrile is excellent for oils and solvents; neoprene works well for acids and caustics; butyl is the choice for gases and ketones.
No. 2: Comfort
Uncomfortable PPE is often left unused—and that puts workers at risk. Gloves that are too tight restrict movement and cut off circulation. Gloves that are too large make work cumbersome and difficult.
Meiji says: The best glove is the one workers actually wear. If it's uncomfortable, they'll take it off—and that's when injuries happen.
No. 3: Dexterity
Safety gloves should protect workers, but not at the expense of productivity. They need to offer enough finger dexterity and touch sensitivity for workers to perform tasks. Bulky gloves can be a danger of their own.
No. 4: Fit and Size
A proper fit is essential. Gloves should be snug but not tight. If they're too loose, they can get caught in machinery. If they're too tight, they'll cause fatigue and be removed.
No. 5: Durability and Care
Some gloves are disposable; others are reusable. For reusable gloves, inspect them before each use. Check for rips, punctures, discoloration, or stiffness—all signs of chemical degradation. Replace damaged gloves immediately.
Proper Glove Use: Rules to Follow
Before Wearing
* Inspect the glove for holes, tears, or chemical damage.
* For chemical gloves, perform an air test—roll the cuff, trap air inside, and squeeze. If you hear hissing air, the glove has a leak.
* Wash your hands before putting gloves on.
During Use
* Change gloves between tasks and between patients/customers. Never wear the same gloves for different tasks without changing them.
* Never touch common objects (phones, doorknobs, elevator buttons, computer keyboards) while wearing gloves. This spreads contamination.
* If working with hazardous chemicals, remove and replace gloves immediately if a chemical spill or splash occurs.
* Never reuse disposable gloves—they are designed for single use only.
After Removing
* Always wash your hands after removing gloves—even when double gloving.
* Use proper doffing technique: grip one glove near the wrist, pull it off inside-out, grip it in your gloved hand, then slide your finger under the second glove and pull it off, containing the first glove inside.
For Reusable Gloves
* Inspect before and after each use.
* Rinse thoroughly after use and air dry.
* Store in a clean, dry area away from chemicals, heat, and sunlight.
* Replace when damaged or showing signs of degradation.
When NOT to Wear Gloves
Never wear gloves of any type while working on or around moving machinery parts such as rotating shafts, belts, pulleys, and similar sliding or rotating movements. Gloves can get caught in machinery and pull your hand in—causing severe injury or amputation.
The rule: If there's a risk of entanglement with rotating parts, DO NOT wear gloves. Use other safeguards instead.
